George Vanderbilt decided to build his home in Western North Carolina during a time when Asheville was growing rapidly and developing its identity as a city. Among the many people brought here to be a part of Biltmore’s construction and operations were individuals who left visible marks on our community outside of the estate. From downtown Asheville to Pisgah Forest, these landscapers, architects, employees, and craftsmen would help shape the historic character of Asheville we know and love today. Biltmore curator Lauren Henry will explore the legacy of individuals including Richard Sharp Smith, Rafael Guastavino, Chauncey Beadle, Dr. Carl Schenck, and more.
